Access
Broadoak Woods forms part of the connective habitat through Connah’s Quay, emerging in Northop. It forms part of a complex with Llwyni Valley Nature Reserve and the Gathering Grounds Woods near to Wepre Park in Connah’s Quay. There is a footpath through the reserve which is accessible as part of the local Public Rights of Way network.
Habitat
Semi-natural broadleaved woodland, stream.
Notable species
- Mammals: badger, fox, grey squirrel, wood mouse and several
- bats: common pipistrelle, soprano pipistrelle and noctule.
- Birds: blue tit, great tit, chaffinch, goldfinch, wren, wood pigeon, tawny owl, great spotted woodpecker, tree creepers, redwing and little egret.
- Woody Species: oak, ash and alder along with smaller tree species of rowan, elder, cherry and crab apple, and hedgerow species including hawthorn and blackthorn.
Special Features
The site is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) both for the Great Crested Newt population and also for the semi-natural ancient woodlands.
Management
Broadoak Woods Nature Reserve is part-owned and managed by Wild Ground.
Broadoak is a popular site for dog walkers.
