Key Stage 3 River Skills Programme now available.
Thanks to new funding from the Ernest Cook Trust we can now deliver our engaging River Skills programme free of charge to selected schools in North Wales. River skills is an interactive programme that helps re-engage Key Stage 3 learners with practical science and geography, through classroom sessions and an extended trip to a nearby river.
The programme aims to target learners who have been identified as special educational needs (SEN) or at risk of disengaging with mainstream school. In addition to the course costs, all costs of transport and equipment will also be covered.
River Skills will encourage students to think about ESDGC and other issues regarding scientific and geographical investigations, water safety, wildlife sampling and pollution. Learning will be directly linked to developing key skills, including literacy and communication.
River Skills is delivered over five, two-hour classroom sessions, with an additional extended trip to investigate and survey a nearby river. The classroom sessions, ideally, will be based at your venue, although they can be based at Groundwork North Wales.
Learners will complete 12 modules and will be awarded with an accredited award in Level 1 River Skills.
Activities include:
- The water cycle, weather, alternative technology and river systems and management
- Water safety and writing risk assessments
- Wildlife capture, classification, identification and adaptations
- Investigating river ecosystems: measuring and recording variables of a river environment
- Analysing data and presenting findings
- Applying practical knowledge to food webs
- Pollution and waste management
- Local case studies
